Facade Construction Manual

With constructions happening everywhere, facade companies in Singapore and other parts of the world are spending a lot of time in deciding how to create a facade system that will help in the building being eco-friendly. As facade greatly influences the heating, lighting and ventilation of a building it becomes instrumental in deciding upon the energy consumption of a building. If the lighting and ventilation of a building is good, it helps in reducing the energy consumption of a building. Thus in the construction industry, facade construction is gaining a lot of importance.

Facade systems comprises of 2 elements: the structural one that provide vertical and lateral resistance to wind and other actions, and the enveloping building structure that provide resistance to the weather and adds resistance properties to thermal pressure and fire. There are many factors that influence the building of facade in a building: the different kinds of facade system that will be used in a building depend on what type the building is and what is the height and area of the building, the local planning of the building and its relation to the neighbouring buildings.

To cite an example, very often we use brickwork as the material for external facade. However, in the modern times, there is an inner leaf that is constructed of steel walls. These steel walls are called infill walling. These have successfully taken over the traditional blockwork. Facade companies in Singapore and other parts of the world keep these factors in mind while designing facade for a building.

Steps of facade construction:

There are five crucial points that one must keep in mind while constructing a facade system:

☼ Understanding the energy profile of the building: one should realize that it is very important to understand the context of the building the boundary walls, the neighbouring buildings, the local weather and for what purpose the building is being constructed. Analysing the factors will only help you in better designing the facade.

☼ Appropriate glazing ratio and the location: it is very important to first understand the location of the building and then deciding the right amount of glazing, to give a good aesthetic look and harness maximum light.

☼ Deciding the shading: along with light and ventilation, deciding on the shading strategy is also important from the architectural perspective.

☼ Deciding the right material: it is very important that the appropriate material is chosen for building the facade.

☼ Designing the facade: after ensuring that the above mentioned factors have been rightly analysed, it is very important to give a good design to the facade system of the building.
